In lieu of fireworks we DID spend the day hiking through Manuel Antonio National Park. Along the path to the beach we were treated to views of stealthy halloween crabs, cavorting squirrel monkeys, roaming howler monkeys and an elusive sloth. After our 40 minute hike we found ourselves at a beautiful white sand beach with turquoise water.
Travelers enjoyed wading, swimming and body surfing. Back at the picnic area curious raccoons wandered freely taking advantage of unattended bags. Fortunately, Jorge, our guide, was vigilant and kept our items safe from the wildlife. A couple of travelers were also treated to a rare sight; a sloth had gone to the ground and those at the picnic area watched him (her?) climb the tree trunk back into the canopy. They really do move as slowly as rumored!
After our beach walk and the hike out of the park, travelers had an opportunity to souvenir shop along the boardwalk adjacent to the public beach outside the park area. We returned to our hotel in time for lunch and the Brazil/Columbia soccer match. Thunder kept the students from the pool in the afternoon but they were content to simply hang out, watch the game or nap until dinner.
Before arriving at Manuel Antonio yesterday, we stopped en route to enjoy a crocodile safari. Loaded onto a boat, travelers had the opportunity to see numerous crocodiles both in the water and on land as well as ten or more different bird species. Back at the boat dock, the beautifully landscaped garden was host to various lizards and butterflies. As we left the safari grounds we pulled to the side of the road to observe five scarlet macaws in a tree set back from the road. What a glorious sight!
We leave for San Jose tomorrow after breakfast and have timed our journey so that we will be at the hotel by the start of the big game.
