Getting to Tortuguero is half the fun; a bumpy bus ride followed by the most amazing canal ride. At the boat dock in la Pavona we had a couple of bag nannies load the boat (bet those boys won't oversleep again!). They were understanding of the consequence and were joined in their efforts by two other travelers acting as good Samaritans. Once aboard the boat we were witness to three different toucans, two different monkey species and an iguana, not to mention various other birds, exotic plants and the elusive water cow. No crocodile sightings yet, but the water in the canals and rivers is running high. Maybe tomorrow ...
Upon arrival at Tortuguero, we were greeted at the dock by our hosts who presented us with a welcome drink of pineapple, orange and papaya juices. Muy deliciouso! Room check-in was made easy by two more bag nannies who cheerfully accepted their consequence as they hauled the chaperones' bags to the rooms (bet they won't be leaving their toiletries behind next time!). A buffet lunch followed with time in the pool after. Then, the main event - zip lining through the canopy.
The zip lining guides were friendly and set even the most fearful minds at ease. After a brief safety lesson the kids took to the trees like the monkeys we'd been listening to all day. Seven cables, a Tarzan swing, a close up view of a bat and a glimpse of a deer - there was something for everyone on this adventure.
